National Best Bar None (BBN) has announced plans to extend the scheme to the off trade, following calls from a number of existing schemes, who feel that that the off trade is a key part of the night time economy.

The decision was made at the February BBN Board meeting and a steering committee including representatives from the off trade will be set up in the coming months. It will not be compulsory for schemes to have an off trade category but by developing guidelines as to how to include and assess off trade premises, this sector can be included where appropriate.

Lord Redesdale, BBN Chairman, said, “It is a logical step forward for Best Bar None to include the off trade. They operate under the same Licensing Act as the on trade and often encounter the same problems of alcohol related disorder.

He added,”We will be discussing how this can be implemented with a strong steering committee with knowledge and understanding of both how Best Bar None works at present and how it can successfully encompass the off trade. I believe this is a positive step forward for both BBN and the night time economy.”
