You can’t get much further west (without getting your feet wet!) than by visiting the Welsh county of Ceredigion.  Coast and countryside abounds within the county and many members of the licensed trade are keen to prove that they really are the best in the west.

Following on from last year’s successful Best Bar None pilot in Aberystwyth when 7 premises gained accreditation; 2010 saw the introduction of the Best Bar None Award throughout the county.  Seaside vied with countryside to gain one of the prestigious awards.

At an Awards Ceremony held at the Council Chamber, Penmorfa, Aberaeron on Friday 9 July 2010, seventeen successful premises were presented with their Welsh slate Best Bar None plaques by Cllr Haydn Lewis, Chairman of the Council.  Congratulating the successful businesses, Cllr Lewis said:

“Best Bar None establishes a benchmark of good practice and raises public awareness about the benefits of choosing well run licensed premises.  These awards are granted to pubs, clubs, bars and leisure complexes doing all they can to cut down on incidents of alcohol related crime and promote responsible drinking, thereby establishing a standard of excellence across Ceredigion.”

Best Bar None is coordinated by Ceredigion County Council in cooperation with Dyfed-Powys Police and the Mid Wales Fire and Rescue Service.  Bryan Thomas, Director, Department of Environmental Services and Housing said:  “This year, for the first time, we introduced an additional category of Leisure Complex to enable caravan parks with social clubs or bars to participate.  The other three categories were Pub, Bar and Club.  Competition for the Best in Category and the Best Overall Winner was very strong. The final and difficult decisions were made by our judging panel consisting of senior officers from both the local authority and Dyfed-Powys Police.”

The successful Best in Category premises and Best Overall Winner together with the runners-up were:

Pub: The Penwig Hotel, New Quay.

Runner-up: The Inn on the Pier, Aberystwyth

Bar: Pier Brasserie and Pier Pavilion, Aberystwyth.
