Ceredigion County Council launched the Best Bar None scheme last year as a pilot initiative in the University town of Aberystwyth. This scheme has generated a lot of interest amongst the local licensed trade and due to it’s success will be running County wide later this year. At a recent awards ceremony, held by Ceredigion County Council, the efforts of local businesses who have excelled in raising catering and licensing standards within the County were recognised. One of the awards being issued during this event was the Best Bar None and Julie Barratt, Director for the Chartered Institute Environmental Health Wales who presented slate plaques to the successful businesses during the ceremony personally congratulated them on their efforts and said “CIEH Wales has been and continues to be a strong supporter and promoter of the Best Bar None scheme in Wales. I am delighted that Ceredigion businesses are so supportive of the scheme and the number of awards given today demonstrates their commitment towards running compliant businesses.” Successful Best Bar None applicants were:Kanes BarPier PressureCourt RoyaleThe Nags HeadThe CastleThe Students Union, Aberystwyth UniversityThe VarsityWhilst assessors were impressed by all successful applications and also during visits to these premises, there were two businesses which scored highly in all categories namely, The Varsity and Pier Pressure which as a result won best pub and Best Club respectively and to Pier Pressure who was the overall winner. The Best Bar None scheme is a national award which aims to recognise and reward businesses which are serious about customer care, customer safety and offer a quality venue. It was developed in Manchester to address alcohol related crime and improve the night time environment and there are now more than 80 schemes currently being run in the UK.
