Forget the BAFTAs and the Academy Awards, champagne corks were popping in Romford this week at the second annual Havering Nightlife Awards.

On Tuesday 10 June, Liquid and Envy nightclub was a sea of sparkles as those responsible for making the borough's night scene thrive attended for the prestigious event. Organised by the Havering Community Safety Partnership (HCSP), the Romford Nightlife Awards recognise night time businesses that demonstrate good management practice and effective anti-social behaviour control.

Judges of the event, which included the local police, Licensing and Trading Standards officials, inspected each of the town’s nightspots to decide the winners of the Nightclub, Pub and Bar of the Year awards.

A special ‘Individual Contribution of the Year’ award was presented to Darren Mills, for his work at the Pacific Edge nightclub in Romford. A further eight categories, including ‘Best Family Venue’, ‘Best Restaurant’, and ‘Best Customer Service’, were judged by public vote.

The awards and presentation event were financed almost entirely by the generous sponsorship of local business. The presentation trophies were designed and produced by talented Havering College student, Charlotte Fowler.

Leader of the Council, Councillor Michael White, said “Romford attracts thousands of night time visitors each week. These awards recognise and celebrate the achievements of our local night time businesses in providing a safe and welcoming destination, through good management and a tough stance against anti-social behaviour.”
