Nearly 200 members of the Licensed and Hospitality industry gathered at the Holiday Inn, Plymouth, for the 3rd Annual Citysafe Ball, incorporating for the first time this year the “Best Bar None” awards. Publicans, hoteliers, restaurant owners, training companies and licensing authorities all donned their dinner suits and posh frocks to celebrate the “cream of Plymouth’s licensed trade”.
The evening kicked off with Mess Beatings from The Corps of Drums of Her Majesty’s Royal Marine Band, Plymouth, the salute being taken by Cllr Peter Brookshaw. This was followed by a fantastic 4-course dinner. The famous Frank “it’s the way I tell um” Carson provided the cabaret, and has lost none of his fast wit, even at the age of 84.
After Frank Carson, a short break, (no-one dared to leave the room while he was on), then the next, and most important stage of the evening, the presentation of the Best Bar None awards.
Before the presentations, the Chairman, Mick McDonnell made a short speech, thanking everyone for making such a splendid effort. He thanked all the sponsors of the awards, he then explained why he felt it was very important to be a member of Citysafe, after which he handed over to Mr Keith De Bruin (South West Regional Chairman of the BII) to explain how the judging was done, and how the decisions were made.

The third Best Bar None National Practitioners Conference will take place on 24 November 2010 at the Ramside Hall, Durham.
Durham has been selected as the venue because Durham BBN were crowned ‘most innovative scheme’ at the 2009 conference. They fought off competition from over 85 BBN schemes throughout the UK.
The conference will feature various practical sessions to assist the development of BBN schemes, as well as updates on impact of licensing changes and cuts.
Neil Robertson, Best Bar None Chief Executive, said, “This will be an exciting conference. With the national and local partners stepping back because of cuts and new licensing legislation pending, those involved in Best Bar None can demonstrate their key role in the industry and be part of the current process of strategic change.”
The conference was over subscribed last year so we’ve increased capacity but please get your booking forms in early. It’s only £50.

The Seventh Manchester Best Bar None Awards took place on Sunday 05 September 2010 at the Town Hall.
Ron Orr, Manchester City Safe Inspector, opened the evening stating “Manchester should be rightly proud that the ground breaking Best Bar None scheme started right here and has now gone onto become a national scheme.”
Manchester’s very own Terry Christian hosted the event and kept the evening flowing while guest speakers from various partner agencies including Manchester Health Service and the BII presented the award categories.
Recognition of the valued support from the licensed trade was also made which in the last three years has helped to achieve a reduction in serious violent crime in Manchester of some 9%.
Assistant Chief Commissioner Garry Shewan had a final word to close the awards where he spoke about the great achievements that have been made in making sure that Manchester is a safe and enjoyable place for people to visit.
Revolutions on Deansgate Locks were crowned overall winners also winning the Best Bar category.

Making night time Ipswich safer and more fun for all |

An ambitious scheme to make Ipswich safer and more fun at night is being launched this week (Wednesday 15th September). Ipswich Best Bar None aims to cut alcohol-related violence and crime, giving people visiting licensed premises more confidence. The scheme, which started in Manchester, is now operating in more than 100 towns and cities in the UK. It has made town centres safer and has helped to establish a benchmark of good practice in pubs, clubs and off-licences. Ipswich Best Bar None will bring together the licensed trade, Ipswich Borough Council, Suffolk Constabulary and town centre improvement company Ipswich Central, although the scheme will run throughout the borough. Councillor Nadia Cenci, Community Safety portfolio-holder for Ipswich Borough Council said the scheme is much more than simply an initiative to cut-crime. “Of course we want to see safer pubs and clubs – and Best Bar None has delivered that right across the country. But we want to go further and encourage people of all ages to feel confident about visiting Ipswich in the evenings. Like all regional centres, Ipswich has an important and thriving night-time economy and we want to create a safer and more confident environment for people going to the theatre or for a meal as well as to pubs and clubs.”
