Judging of the Shropshire Best Bar None candidates for 2009 has taken place today (16th October 2009) winners and runners up in the three categories have been chosen, as has the overall "gold award" winner for the County.

The details of the winners will be a closely guarded secret until the Awards evening that will take place on 18th January 2010 at the Prostar Stadium (Shrewsbury Town Football Club).

The Shropshire Best Bar None scheme was launched in March 2009, and since then over 30 licensed premises around the County have been examined by Assessors from the Police, Local Authority, private sector and Councillors.

16 of the premises inspected achieved the highest award available at assessment stage - a silver award. These pubs and clubs have gone  forward to be judged for the prestigious Gold Award for 2009, the solitary and highest award achievable in the scheme.

Speaking on behalf of the Best Bar None scheme organisers, Police Licensing Officer Tony Mantle said "All the Assessors were in awe of the amount of work it takes to run pubs and clubs successfully.  The aim of the scheme is to raise standards in the Licensed sector, and we hope the scheme has contributed to that".  He reiterated that the identities of the category and gold award winners would remain secret until the award evening.

The Scheme will open again early in 2010, and Mr. Mantle was hopeful that the scheme would be expanded to encompass more pubs and licensed premises in a wider area of Shropshire.
