Unfortunately Somerset BBN awards night that was due to take place on Tuesday 24 November 2009 has now been postponed until Tuesday 19 January 2010. This is the first time such a scheme has been operated in Somerset, and organisers are delighted that it has attracted a large number of applicants. The black tie finale of the scheme has also received very high level of interest with further guests announcing attendance in the past two weeks. To allow a little more time to make all the preparations and to commit sufficient staff resources needed, the organisers have decided to rearrange the event to Tuesday 19 January, in order to ensure that high expectations are met and that the expected 200 guests enjoy a high quality and memorable awards evening. Organisers are already finalising an even wider programme for January’s event, which will take place at Westlands Leisure Complex, Yeovil. . |

Durham City’s Best Bar None scheme, designed to cut alcohol-related crime, create a safer environment in the city centre at night and improve licensed premises, is the best in the UK – bar none. Of the 95 schemes that are in operation throughout the country, Durham’s has been chosen as the most innovative. And with that accolade has come a £1,500 prize and the honour of hosting a national conference in the city next year. The scheme, a partnership between the police and County Council, started two years ago and 75 per cent of all bars in the city, including those at university colleges, signed up. Carol Feenan, the Best Bar None manager for the Council, said the award, handed out at this year’s annual conference in Leicester, was “absolutely fantastic” and added: “It is a resounding endorsement for all the hard work of the participating licensees.” She and Sgt Steve Norris, Best Bar None manager on the policing side, delivered a presentation on how the scheme is run in Durham – one of four selected finalists to talk to the conference. |

Judging of the Shropshire Best Bar None candidates for 2009 has taken place today (16th October 2009) winners and runners up in the three categories have been chosen, as has the overall "gold award" winner for the County. The details of the winners will be a closely guarded secret until the Awards evening that will take place on 18th January 2010 at the Prostar Stadium (Shrewsbury Town Football Club). The Shropshire Best Bar None scheme was launched in March 2009, and since then over 30 licensed premises around the County have been examined by Assessors from the Police, Local Authority, private sector and Councillors. 16 of the premises inspected achieved the highest award available at assessment stage - a silver award. These pubs and clubs have gone forward to be judged for the prestigious Gold Award for 2009, the solitary and highest award achievable in the scheme. Speaking on behalf of the Best Bar None scheme organisers, Police Licensing Officer Tony Mantle said "All the Assessors were in awe of the amount of work it takes to run pubs and clubs successfully. The aim of the scheme is to raise standards in the Licensed sector, and we hope the scheme has contributed to that". He reiterated that the identities of the category and gold award winners would remain secret until the award evening. The Scheme will open again early in 2010, and Mr. Mantle was hopeful that the scheme would be expanded to encompass more pubs and licensed premises in a wider area of Shropshire. |
