Best Bar None goes to Canada News of the success of the UK’s Best Bar None scheme has reached across the Atlantic to Canada, where the first scheme outside the UK is in its planning stages. Representatives from Alberta’s Gaming & Liquor Commission, Social Responsibility approached the national board of BBN seeking approval to take the scheme to Canada. Following the Board meeting in September this approval was granted. Kent Verlik and Eric Baich from Alberta recently enjoyed a fact finding trip to the UK, where they attended the first national BBN conference in Doncaster, and visited Reading town centre, hosted by Bill Donne, who sits on the BBN board and is also part of Reading & National Pubwatch. They also spent time with Sarah Walker, BBN National Project Administrator to learn more about the national scheme. Their trip helped them see how UK BBN schemes work and the value of adopting the scheme in their own country. Lord Redesdale, Chairman of BBN, said, “We were delighted to be approached by the Alberta Gaming & Liquor Commission with the view to adopting the scheme in Canada. In the UK we have seen the positive impact BBN has made to over 80 town centres across the UK and we look forward to hearing about more success from across the Atlantic. Perhaps this will be the first of many international schemes.”
