Best Bar None gets full marks for students PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Young people across the country will be heading off to universities of their choice in September and October and for many parents and young people the issue of enjoying alcohol and licensed premises responsibly will be at the forefront of their minds.

Best Bar None, the national award scheme for the licensed retail sector, offers university bound young adults and their parents the reassurance that licensed premises which hold the awards are safe and responsible.

Lord Redesdale, Chairman of Best Bar None, said, “Universities support young people having fun but also encourage students to be alcohol and safety aware. Many freshers are new to big cities and towns, and drinking too much in a new environment can sometimes result in unsafe situations. Responsible retailing schemes, such as Best Bar None, have an important role in making both students and parents happier about enjoying the freedoms that university offers.

He added, “I would urge prospective students to visit our website to find out if there is a Best Bar None scheme in their university town, many student union bars are part of their local scheme. Whilst Best Bar None does not guarantee there will never be trouble at a venue, seeing the logo outside a bar or club sends the message that this is a place that takes responsible retailing seriously and that you will be enjoying yourselves in a positive and safe environment.” Adele Bradley, Newcastle Best Bar None, said, “Newcastle is a lively student city with a population of 40,000 students. We work with our Student Liaison Officer to promote BBN venues directly to students. We market the scheme directly to students through student newspapers and publications. “We felt that it was important to engage with both university bars, ones in student areas and also with the universities themselves to promote Best Bar None and social responsibility. It is important that students enjoy themselves but they are also aware of social responsibility and being good neighbours. So far the scheme has been met with positivity and this academic year we will be building on this even further. She added, “Northumbria Students Union took part for the first time in our 2008 scheme. We were very impressed with their levels of student safety and they managed to scoop Gold award in our club category.”
