At the first annual Best Bar None Awards it was Durham Student Union Bar that took the title of Durham’s Best bar. Manager Graham Ambler and his team took the title beating three other category winners at Tuesday night’s prestigious awards dinner, “It is just unbelievable! I was just so pleased to get the accreditation to show we have good standards in our bar, but to win the overall title – fabulous! ”The City of Durham Council and the Police teamed up as part of the ‘Nightsafe’ Initiative aimed at managing the booming night time economy in the City Centre. In March this year a competition was launched to find the best-run venue in the city centre area. All 52 licensees were invited to take part in the scheme. Three-quarters of those eligible opted to take part in the competition, a far higher percentage than for many similar schemes in other parts of the country. Inspector Ian Proud said, “How good it is to see all of the licensees in the city centre getting together for the good of the city, plans are already underway to launch the 2nd scheme and we hope that even more premises will come on board.” Since then the ‘Best Bar None’ assessors: Carol Feenan and Inspector Ian Proud have visited nearly three dozen premises, looking at issues such as the facilities provided for customers, staff training, security, measures implemented to combat binge drinking and the use of ‘shatterproof’ polycarbonate glasses. All of the successful licensee got a specially designed plaque and certificate and the winning premises received a uniquely designed silver trophy and plaque to display on site for the next twelve months, along with various promotional materials. Carol Feenan, Scheme Manager said: “We have had a fantastic uptake for this scheme, which just goes to show how dedicated our licensees are to ensure public safety in the city. Even some of the venues who did not come out on top have commented that they are keen to incorporate the examples of good practice that have come out of the winning premises.”
