Student Consultancies to research BBN in Leeds PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Students at Leeds Metropolitan University have been invited to undertake roles as research consultants for Leeds Best Bar None, looking into why some pubs and bars in Leeds have not engaged with the scheme.

Leeds BBN has attracted a number of entries during 2007/8 but there are many venues who did not enter. The BBN team would like to understand the reasons for venues not entering and ways in which to engage them.

There will be three consultancy teams formed from the Leslie Silver International Faculty at Leeds Metropolitan University; two from the BA (hons) International Hospitality Business  Management and one from the BA (hons) Entertainment Management.

The teams will review the Best Bar None award in Leeds and interview licensees who entered the scheme last year to learn about their experience. The most challenging part of the research will involve interviewing a large number, if not all, of licensees who did not get involved to find out how to get them to enter future schemes.

Jo Rostron, Leeds Best Bar None, said, “We were delighted that a number of licensees got involved in last year’s scheme but we are aware that many did not. This research project should help to engage more licensees in the scheme by listening to their thoughts on BBN and also how to get them interested. BBN is a voluntary and inclusive scheme but we need to know just how to make more of our licensees involved.

She added, “The recommendations from this project will help Leeds BBN improve its strategy for recruitment and as many recommendations as possible will be implemented for the 2009 recruitment drive.”

Dr Alexandra Kenyon, Leeds Metropolitan University, said, “We wanted to get involved in this project as it will give our students a wider understanding of the issues facing the licensed trade as well helping to build on their enterprising skills.”

Lord Redesdale, National BBN Chairman, said, “This is an innovative approach to research which should benefit both the students involved and Leeds BBN. I look forward to  hearing the findings from this project as they can be useful for other schemes.”

Findings will be presented in January 2009.
