Each local scheme will approach its own Best Bar None process in a slightly different way to ensure that it meets the local needs but there is an general process developed in Manchester which is adopted by local schemes.
Best Bar None application form A number of schemes hold a launch event for the start of that year’s Best Bar None Awards and invite all local licensees to the event. The application pack including the application form is then circulated. The form varies in length depending on the scheme but addresses a wide range of issues that a well managed premises should be aware of and be addressing. The form is completed by the premises seeking approval. Assessment Following the application process all premises are then visited by accredited assessors who undertake a more in-depth assessment of the premises. In some areas the initial application form is short and the bulk of the assessment takes place at this time. Following the assessment visit the application forms are marked and ranked in order of scores. Premises will only be compared with other similar premises. The standard categories are pubs, bars and nightclubs. Approval If a premises meets the minimum standard set by the assessors they are then awarded Best Bar None approval and will be able to display signage outside and inside their premises. Awards The top five (may vary from scheme to scheme) premises in each category are then put forward to be judged for the overall awards. The judging process is an opportunity to involve a wider group of local opinion formers and significant members of the local community. Representatives on the judging panel can include local MPs or councillors, prominent police officers, sponsors of the scheme, representatives from licensed trade bodies, local authority representatives and the local media. The panel will visit each of the shortlisted premises and a winner and runner up is awarded in each category with an overall winner. Award Ceremony These winners would then be announced at an Award Ceremony. This can be approached in the best way for the local scheme from a high profile awards night to a ceremony at the council offices or an event in a local pub. This is an ideal way of rewarding the participants in the scheme and also showing the importance of Best Bar None to your local area and gaining publicity for the scheme.
